This episode opens with Shinji threatening to blow up NERV HQ. Unfortunately he talks a bit too much and the bridge crew manage to knock him into unconsciousness before he can make good on his threats. From this we can conclude that the Second Impact prevented Pixar from making The Incredibles, thus leaving Shinji uneducated as to the thread of “monologuing.” Sorry, I know that this is not a funny episode. I just have to take my moments of lightness where I can get them, you know? Moving on.
After the events of “Ambivalence,” Shinji is done. Even Gendo saying he’s disappointed in him barely registers. Asuka refusing to say goodbye—fine. Shinji doesn’t care anymore. When Misato tries to remind him of the dangers of people pleasing, he shoots back: that’s how you live. I can’t live that way.
