For Poets & Writers, Lily Meyer writes about the work of translation. “Translation is often seen as a labor of love,” she writes. “I sometimes think of it as one. Certainly I do it because I love it, not because society impels me. But do I translate endlessly because I love it?” I really enjoyed the different facets of this essay, in particular the reflections on the complementary work of writing and translation and how they use different skills.

Meyer also has some harsh words about the pay structure of translation, including this somewhat horrifying anecdote: “I recently had a conversation with a prolific poetry translator who had never been paid by a publisher and was baffled that I expected otherwise.” What!
