At The Baffler, Jess McAllen writes critically about the anti-psychiatry movement. I enjoyed this piece particularly as somebody who has anti-psychiatry sympathies while also requiring the assistance of, well, psychiatry. It is weird and annoying to rely on medications to get through the day while also sort of suspecting they don’t work… except they are working because you can tell they’re working… but… and so on.

Anyway, I learned a lot from McAllen’s piece, including the involvement of Scientology in various movements. (Which doesn’t, obviously, make everybody she writes about a secret Scientologist—some people quoted find the involvement of Scientology in a cause they care about distressing.) Also she does a little of one of my favorite moves, which is going through people’s sources and discovering some of them are pretty embarrassing or dubious. I wish more people did this!
