If it helps, I can at least guarantee that the next one feels different. I won't guess at whether you will like it, but to me at least it felt like a different vibe than anything that came before.
Also, I spent a lot of time when I was watching these movies trying to figure out how Mari was essential to understanding how Anno's experience of Evangelion had changed by the time he was making this, but AFAICT, she's a complete side effect of marketing: it was suggested that the movies would be easier to sell if they introduced a brand-new character, and the only real mandate was "create someone who feels very different from the other pilots we've seen." Which...mission accomplished! She definitely gets used in interesting ways, but I honestly don't think Anno had that much involvement in her design or cared that much how she shifted the actual plot other than being the person who represents "this is a new universe."
I didn't see this one and I think I will continue not seeing it. Rei running with toast in her mouth is the only peek into an alternate universe that I needed...
My initial disappointment with 2.0 was that (given how 1.0 was), I was hoping the movies would be a compact remake of the series that I could recommend. But instead it became something that I’m not sure would make sense without the rest of the series.
I sympathize with the struggle to understand what’s actually significant about the changes. At some point I decided that Mari sums up everything that is significant about the rebuilds. I am completely unfamiliar with the “immortal lesbian,” but yes, probably.
This is the one where I stopped with Evangelion, so I’m curious how the next two feel for you. I remember being tired of the whole thing around this point (it didn’t help that the screening I went to was torrented(?) and had some mistakes with the end with the subtitle hidden under [MUSIC PLAYING])
I do remember the end of this being good, but the whole stew was getting to be frustrating. I’ve heard the 3rd and 4th are good though..
yeah I guess the open question for me is: is my feeling of "I'm fed up" (1) an achieved artistic effect (2) an artistic failure (3) the result of watching Evangelion continuously for a year. None of these are mutually exclusive really but I can imagine the existence of developments where what is frustrating about this movie is redeemed in retrospect. And I can also imagine that these will not happen.
I think for me it was finish Evangelion show and went wow that was one of the best things I've ever seen can't wait for more! into End of Eva which I did like but it's a brutal watch and made me reconsider wanting more into first place into the first two Rebuild movies where I felt Way Too Full
