Jonathan Swift has a line that is sort of the inverse of that ("I hate and detest that animal called man, although I heartily love John, Peter, Thomas, and so forth").
I watched the first two rebuilds when they were first coming out, sort of—that is I was too excited to wait to watch the second one so I imported it from Japan and watched it without subtitles and then I never did watch it with subtitles. So I will say the ending of Rebuild 2 is NUTS but it's probably WAY MORE NUTS if you have even the slightest idea of what is going on… excited to find out.
I vaguely remember watching a youtube video (tiktok? instagram reel?) where someone was trying to figure out what Gendo’s words to Ritsuko were. I think the conclusion he drew was that they were “truly, I needed you” but mostly because a laptop screen at NERV shows those words later on.
"Ritsuko" types that on Maya's computer during the Third Impact, but I don't think that means it's what Gendo said, it just means it's what Maya wants to hear. I think though if you imagine various lines there ("I loved you," "I never loved you," "I respected you," "I never respected you") you realize Ritsuko's reaction works with all of them.
It is brilliant, isn't it. Thank you for writing all of this.
This is a great write-up! I need to re-watch because my only recollection of End of Evangelion was its "so is THIS what you wanted?!" presentation.
> life is beautiful and worth living, but some of you are just really annoying.
Reminds me of the "I love mankind, it's people I can't stand" saying (of which I do not know the provenance)

Ha ha ha I knew I remembered it from somewhere: Linus says it in a Peanuts comic strip 😂

absolutely lost it at footnote 4.
I'm excited for the next stage of this series-- I haven't read the manga or watched the rebuilds, and I'm going to try to keep up as you go.
